Bosses admit designers copied the joystick on modern handsets when creating the car's steering wheel-mounted switches.

These allow drivers to shift up, down, left and right to find their way around phone, cruise control and audio settings, then press the centre 'OK' button to select the option.

"You can get in the new Mondeo and answer the phone, set the speed or change music without resorting to the handbook," explained Ford development supervisor Dr Stefan Becker. Discuss here
