Including the forthcoming Dodge Nitro, the Chrysler group now has eight SUVs in its range – but it’s confident that each occupies a different niche, with distinct prices and looks.
The newest – and cheapest – is the Patriot. A compact SUV, it costs from £15,995, while engine choices are a 168bhp 2.4-litre petrol unit or VW’s 138bhp 2.0-litre diesel. Designed to appeal to Ford Focus buyers who need something more rugged, the Patriot offers a traditional Jeep shape with smaller proportions. And the oil-burner returns 42.2mpg.
Those with a little extra to spend can buy the more car-like Compass (below), available from £17,995. An upmarket Dodge Caliber alternative, it fills a similar brief to the Nissan Qashqai, and Jeep is confident the Compass’s less angular appearance will distinguish it from the rugged Patriot.
Moving up in size, the next Cherokee goes on sale early in 2008. Based on the same platform as the Dodge Nitro, it will have a low-range gearbox as well as greater mud-plugging abilities than the Nitro. Jeep’s other 4x4 models comprise the latest Grand Cherokee, huge Commander and redesigned Wrangler. The last of these, on offer with long or short wheelbases, is a Land Rover Defender rival aimed at those who want hardcore off-road ability.
With a 4x4 to suit so many tastes, the US group – Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep – has a wide model range, despite recently splitting from its Daimler partner. But the German brand still holds a stake in Chrysler, so the American marques will continue to benefit from some shared technology.
