In only his sixth race, the McLaren driver triumphed in Canada and extended his lead in the title chase to eight points over team-mate and reigning champion Fernando Alonso. But although the 22-year-old has yet to finish a grand prix outside the top three, he admitted that life isn’t always going to be as rosy.

“The next dream is obviously to win the world championship,” he said. “But at the moment, we have to be realistic. It’s worth bearing in mind that I’m still a rookie and this is my first season. There are going to be some hard times. I hope that there aren’t, but it’s just bound to happen. It’s the way that it goes in this business and there will be good days and bad days.”
Although he held on to the lead from start to finish, he admitted that he thought he might lose out after the red lights went out. He said: “I made quite a poor getaway to be honest, so I covered my position and went through the first corner when I saw Fernando fly down the outside. I thought ‘no, I’m going to lose it here.’
“But he just went straight, so I was able to continue with my line.” Alonso lost another position to BMW’s Nick Heidfeld and was then penalised for refuelling when the pits were closed. He revealed: “This was a strange race with the safety car being deployed four times, which worked to Lewis’ advantage and my disadvantage. I came into the pits as I had no more fuel, so basically there was nothing I could do. It was a shame as this resulted in a 10-second penalty, but there was no alternative other than to stop on the track with no fuel.” The Spaniard eventually finished seventh.
