The Government has given the go-ahead for a study into the impact of street lighting on road accidents at night. It’s appointed the Berkshire-based Transport Research Laboratory (TRL) to look at crash figures and link them to the levels of illumination on the routes in question. The aim is to discover whether current lighting systems need to be updated.

A CONTROVERSIAL city car park is to be pulled down to make way for more modern developments. The multi-storey is Gateshead’s best-known building, having appeared in classic film Get Carter. A restaurant was built on top of the Sixties site, but never opened. Residents have campaigned for its demolition for years, and plans to bulldoze it were originally put forward in 2001.
