Level-headed Hamilton cools title talk

Rookie sensation Lewis Hamilton is refusing to think about winning this year’s F1 world championship, despite scoring two back-to-back victories in North America.

Wins in Canada and last Sunday in Indianapolis have given the 22-year-old a 10-point lead over team-mate Fernando Alonso in the standings. But he is keen to play down his amazing achievements and denies that he is raising his sights.

“I wouldn’t say my goals have changed,” he insisted, after making it seven straight podiums by winning at Indy. “I came into this season with an open mind, just trying to do a good job. Yes, I have to be smart and realise that I’m running at the front and there is a possibility of winning the championship.

“But I still think it’s far too early to think about it or get any hopes up. Anything can happen – I just have to try and remain consistent and keep winning.” Hamilton’s meteoric rise has certainly shocked Alonso, who signed for McLaren expecting to be the outfit’s top gun, having twice beaten Michael Schumacher to take two world titles. “It has been a surprise for me, and for everybody, to see him doing so well and leading the championship at this point,” said the Spaniard, who is refusing to concede his crown so early in the campaign.

“We have only done seven races, and there are 10 to go. So I’m very happy with my 48 points, and the championship will be decided at the end. I have confidence that I can do it.” Battle is resumed in France on 1 July, with the British GP only seven days later. But, whatever happens at Magny-Cours, Lewis will be leading the championship when F1 returns to these shores in little more than a fortnight’s time.
