Pothole repairs set to go green

Britain's crumbling roads could be repaired more quickly and with less impact on the environment thanks to a pioneering new system

28th June 2007

It uses a portable gas heater to melt the tarmac around potholes to 215 degrees Celsius in less than eight minutes, and can fix damaged highways for a fraction of the cost of current methods. What's more, the technology recycles existing road materials.

Fife-based Nu-Phalt Scotland aims to roll out the system across the UK by the end of the year. "We melt the road round the hole to fill in the damage, so there is no waste and very little disruption to traffic," said boss Gary Gibson.
