Brought in as part of new Prime Minister Gordon Brown’s “need for change”, Ms Kelly was most recently in charge of the Community portfolio.
As she moves to Transport, there are already calls for urgent action from her. Tim Shallcross of the IAM Motoring Trust said: “She must get on with the reviews of speed limits, congestion charging and reducing road deaths.”
Geoff Dossetter, of the Freight Transport Association, stated: “Investment in the road network simply hasn’t kept pace with the growth of the economy, or the number of cars.”
Meanwhile, the Association of British Drivers would like to see more police patrols. “We want police out of their offices and back on the roads,” said spokesman Hugh Bladon.
