The luxurious model comes fully kitted out with leather, climate control, a trip computer, cruise control, an MP3 connection, automatic lights and wipers and alloy wheels.

Buyers have a choice of three petrol engines – a 1.8-litre delivering 138bhp, a 148bhp 2.2 or a 197bhp 2.0 turbo – plus a 1.9-litre CDTI diesel with 118bhp or 148bhp.

Prices for the high-spec newcomer start at £18,950 for the 1.8. Meanwhile, at the other end of the Zafira range is a fresh entry-level variant. Called the Expression, it’s only available with the 106bhp 1.6-litre Twinport petrol engine, mated to a five-speed manual gearbox. Inside, you’ll find electric windows, remote central locking and a CD player. The base car costs £12,995.
