OFT backs garage quality move

The quality-boosting Bosch Car Service scheme has gained approval from Government body, the OFT

30th July 2007

Designed to set minimum service requirements for garages and workshops, the new programme promises to improve customer service for motorists.

The Office of Fair Trading's chief executive, John Fingleton, said: “Consumers can be confident that, at outlets where they see our approved logo, they are guaranteed a high standard of service, and they will be dealt with properly if any problems do arise.”

More than 400 independent garages across the UK are already part of the Bosch scheme, which ensures customers are treated fairly thanks to a range of requirements. For example, participating workshops must provide clear information regarding the cost of labour and parts before any work is carried out, as well as estimated completion times.

The new code aims to prevent customers from being charged for unnecessary jobs, and also lays out clear, simple guidelines to resolve complaints. Member garages are required to undergo regular tests to ensure they meet the standards laid out by Bosch, and mystery shoppers are also used to help identify underperforming outlets.
