Driver reactions put to test

Are driver aids making motorists less alert? That’s what scientists at Leeds University will attempt to find out with this amazing new simulator

The most sophisticated rig of its kind in Europe, the set-up (right) will be used to test if drivers lose concentration when tasks are automated by inventions such as advanced cruise control and lane-departure warning.

The £1million machine mimics the motions of a real car. Its telescopic legs let it pitch and tilt, while 10-metre rails allow it to slide along at speed to replicate the forces of gra-vity when accelerating and cornering. Six video screens combine with LCD displays in the mirrors to create the illusion of a real-world journey. The cabin will have ‘virtual’ driver aids, and volunteers will experience simulated traffic situations to see how these devices affect their reactions.
