Sloping rear end gives the new X6 a coupé-style appearance

The most sophisticated rig of its kind in Europe, the set-up (right) will be used to test if drivers lose concentration when tasks are automated by inventions such as advanced cruise control and lane-departure warning.
The £1million machine mimics the motions of a real car. Its telescopic legs let it pitch and tilt, while 10-metre rails allow it to slide along at speed to replicate the forces of gra-vity when accelerating and cornering. Six video screens combine with LCD displays in the mirrors to create the illusion of a real-world journey. The cabin will have ‘virtual’ driver aids, and volunteers will experience simulated traffic situations to see how these devices affect their reactions.
