If there's one new car that's caught the imagination of motoring fans across the globe this year, it's Fiat's 500.

It's been a long time since the little Italian hatchback was first shown in concept form in 2004, and there's still more to come from the legendary marque. To chart the Fiat's progress we've brought together a gallery of some of the best pictures charting the 500's route from concept car to reality.

But there's a lot more to come from Italy's baby. As well as the forthcoming Abarth version, there are plans for a load lugger and a convertible. The future's bright for fans of small Fiats.

1. Fiat 500 concepts
A lot of thought goes into redesigning a legend. These are some of the final designs submitted for the 500 production car.

Unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show in 2004, the Trepiuno concept introduced the world to the idea of modern day Fiat 500.
