White-hot new Clio targets Cup glory

Cup variation of Renaultsport Clio promises to be more extreme than 197, but also more relaxing on motorway jaunts

More extreme yet more relaxing – that’s Renaultsport’s new Clio Cup.

It’s a more hardcore version of the racy 197 supermini, yet thanks to a revised gearbox with taller fifth and sixth ratios, it promises quieter cruising on the motorway.

However, this hasn’t come at the expense of fun. The newcomer gets the stiffer suspension set-up already seen on the special Clio R27 F1, giving even better handling.

Under the bonnet is the same high-revving 2.0-litre engine as in the standard Renaultsport model. Braking performance should be just as strong, with powerful Brembo calipers at the front. Externally, the Cup is marked out by bright white paint, which is available for the first time on the sporty supermini. The standard alloy wheels are finished in anthracite, while buyers wanting a more aggressive look can choose larger satin black Speedline rims.

Inside, it’s standard Clio, although the air-con has been dropped to the options list in an attempt to save weight. The figure-hugging Recaro seats from the R27 will also be available.

While prices have yet to be announced, the new Clio Cup is likely to cost around ÂŁ15,500 when it lands in Renault dealer forecourts later this month.
