Are manufacturers being fair to their independent competitors? No, says the European Commission.

Mercedes, Toyota, Fiat and Vauxhall drivers are still having difficulty getting their cars maintained outside the dealer network, even though new legislation was supposed to make it much easier.
The European Commission (EC) says the firms are ignoring laws that require them to share technical data about their cars with independent garages. The Block Exemption Review (BER), which began in 2002, forced makers to give details and support to non-franchised repair and service centres. And now, the EC is watching the quartet closely – good news for drivers.
Ray Holloway, from the Retail Motor Industry Federation, said: “This move will help strengthen the partnership between indepenthedent garages and franchises.”
