LA design stars
Cars of the future

It might look like the story board for a new science fiction film – but this gallery reveals eight models with official manufacturer backing!

Take a look at all the latest stars of the LA Motor Show’s annual design competition. Creating concepts that look like everything from Star Wars space ships to organic entities, the world’s top designers have let their imaginations run wild.

The theme of the 2007 Design Challenge at this year’s event is ‘Robocar 2057’ and it has prompted a string of far-out designs.

Most far fetched of all is the Mercedes SilverFlow. In its futuristic rehlm, the incredible vehicle can take different shapes thanks to its micro-metallic body, which can be shaped using magnetic fields. It can even be turned into a pool of material for easy storage!

The Nissan entry takes a completely different approach. The OneOne is designed to be the ultimate pet and its name (pronounced ‘won-won’) is derived from the Japanese description of a barking dog!

Other brands competing in this year’s competition include Audi, Honda, Toyota, Volkswagen and Mazda. The winning design will be announced at the Los Angeles Motor Show in November.
