Crooks beware – the next car you steal could be radio controlled. General Motors has developed a new anti-theft system that can be operated remotely by police to slow down a stolen vehicle.
The device is a development of GM’s OnStar tracking technology. It uses a digital signal to override a vehicle’s engine management system. Officers can then reduce the throttle and bring the car safely to a halt, avoiding a high-speed pursuit. For owners it means their pride and joy is likely to be returned in one piece, while the lack of a chase will reduce the risk of casualties.
The hi-tech gadget is due to be installed in the firm’s US market cars from early 2009. However, a GM spokesman claimed that the device could also find its way into Vauxhall, Chevrolet and Cadillac models sold in the UK.
