Safety is what normally springs to mind when you think of Volvo. But three new extreme models reveal an adventurous side to the firm. It unveiled the sporty editions at the Specialty Equipment Market Association (SEMA) show in Las Vegas this week.

First up is the eye-catching Volvo XC70 Surf Rescue (SR). Inspired by the lifeguard vehicles seen on California beaches, the all-wheel-drive SR features raised suspension, oversized tyres, heavily modified panels and seat trim made from wetsuit fabric. It’s powered by a 3.2-litre 235bhp engine.

The XC70 was joined by a racy C30. Aside from striking bodywork and a bright orange interior with matching leather seats, the newcomer also has a lowered stance, custom bodykit and larger air ducts. Under the bonnet is an upgraded, 2.5-litre five-cylinder turbocharged engine producing 300bhp – enough to cut the 0-62mph sprint time to only 5.4 seconds.

Also appearing at the show was the S80 High Performance Concept (HPC). It has reflective metal-effect paint, is powered by a 350bhp six-cylinder engine that runs on bioethanol and has a 0-60mph time of 5.8 seconds. Inside, the HPC is kitted out with a blue leather interior, bucket seats in the rear and an aluminium centre console.
