Williams has confirmed that the 22-year-old Nakajima - who was promoted from test driver for a debut in the season-ending Brazil Grand Prix - will partner German Nico Rosberg.

However, the driver market is in flux while Alonso's future remains in doubt. The Spaniard, who left McLaren last week, has options at Renault, Toyota and Red Bull. One source close to Renault has told Auto Express that he was "98 per cent certain" that Alonso would return to the team with which he won both his drivers' titles. Renault team boss Flavio Briatore is said to be putting together a multi-million-pound deal to entice Alonso back.

In a further twist Renault is believed to be committed to promoting their Brazilian test driver Nelson Piquet Jr to a race seat in 2008, and he is likely to partner either Alonso or Kovalainen. If Alonso was to rejoin Renault, Briatore could sell Kovalainen's contract to either McLaren or Toyota as he is also the Finn’s manager.

Meanwhile GP2 champion Timo Glock’s future in Formula One is set to be decided by the sport's Contract Recognition Board.

According to a sources within the F1 paddock BMW Sauber and Toyota both seem to have signed a deal with the young German. Auto Express has learnt that Toyota has won the battle to sign him for the 2008 season but after lodging their contract with the CRB it was found that there was a conflict with some of the conditions detailed in his current contract at BMW Sauber.

BMW Sauber reportedly has Glock tied down to a long-term deal but the German team is prepared to let the GP2 driver race for a rival to gain experience next season.

The matter will now be decided by the CRB, with a decision expected imminently.
