New range-topping Borrego SUV has seven seats and torquey petrol engines

Set to be unveiled at the Detroit Motor Show in January, it will take on established rivals such as the Land Rover Discovery.
The model is a toned-down version of the Mesa concept, seen at the same expo in 2005. It will be larger than the firm’s current Sportage and Sorento SUVs, and has space for seven over three rows of seats.
Power comes from 3.8-litre V6 or V8 petrol engines – no diesel has been announced – with both delivering plenty of torque for superb towing capacity. Production starts early next year in Korea, but the Borrego – named after a breed of rare mountain sheep – is intended primarily for the North American market. No decision has yet been made on bringing it here.
A spokesman for Kia UK told us: “We’re always keen to respond to customers’ needs. If there is sufficient interest in the Borrego to sell it in Britain, we’ll give it serious consideration.” If it does come here, a diesel engine option would be likely, and prices could start at about £30,000.
Meanwhile, Kia’s European manufacturing plant – the 1billion Euro facility at Zilina in Slovakia – is working so efficiently that production of the new Pro_cee’d has begun six weeks ahead of schedule.
The sporty three-door hatch, which debuted at September’s Frankfurt Motor Show, will arrive in UK dealers at the start of February. It is expected to cost from around £12,000.
