Honda fuel cell LA Show star

Japanese giant launches the world's first production fuel cell powered car

14th November 2007

These are the first images of Honda's stunning hydrogen-powered motor. Called the FCX Clarity, it is the first production car to feature a fuel cell powertrain.

Underneath the rakish exterior is a hi-tech powerplant that combines hydrogen and oxygen to produce electricity. This then powers a motor placed between the front wheels. Unlike traditional petrol or diesel vehicles, the newcomer's only exhaust emission is harmless water vapour.

By also utilising a lithium ion-battery pack and regenerative braking, the Clarity can achieve a fuel-sipping 65mpg. That's good enough for a range of about 270 miles.

Only available as part of a lease scheme, the first examples will be with US customers late next year.
