Euro laws that would see tyres labelled with eco ratings could cause more accidents, warns Continental.
The manufacturer hit out at the plans this week, saying the sticker system – similar to that used on fridges – would encourage buyers to opt for tyres with low rolling resistance, which save on fuel. But these also have less grip, and are “much worse at braking in the wet”, according to Continental’s head of tyre development, Prof Burkhard Wies.
He warned: “Tests prove that even quality products designed for extremely low rolling resistance and high mileage are 10 per cent worse at wet braking than those with good all-round properties. Such developments would inevitably cause more accidents.” As the graphic (pictured) reveals, the most eco-friendly rubber could increase the braking distance from 62mph by up to eight metres.
The labelling system could see eco-friendly rubber – including tyres with a low noise pollution rating – get an A-star award. Motorists who use it could benefit from lower road tax, saving up to £50 a year.
