Mitsubishi Concept-RA

Diesel surprise on new coupé

Here's a high-performance coupé with a difference! Mitsubishi is preparing to take the wraps off the Concept-RA at the Detroit Motor Show in January.

New Concept-RA points to look of Mitsubishi’s next Eclipse coupé, and shares underpinnings with Lancer Evo. But under its dramatic body is a diesel engine.

Take a look at Mitsubishi's latest performance car concept. But instead of a potent petrol engine, under the bonnet is an economical 2.2-litre diesel. Don’t be fooled by this sensible powerplant, though, as the sleek show car has Lancer Evolution underpinnings, and gets the firm’s Super All Wheel Control (S-AWC) system.

These official sketches show just what to expect from the headline-grabbing coupé. Its common-rail unit features MIVEC variable valve timing to enhance fuel economy, and develops 201bhp. There’s also a 420Nm torque output, although the engine still meets stringent new emissions rules equivalent to Euro V regulations.

The hi-tech diesel is expected to join the Mitsubishi line-up next year under the bonnet of the Outlander SUV, all-new Lancer and forthcoming cX soft-roader. And the engine isn’t the Concept-RA’s only advanced feature. It also uses an aluminium space frame chassis to cut weight.

The exterior panels are made from a lightweight and easy-to-recycle plastic resin. And the good news for fans of the stunning model is that the Japanese brand has a reputation for putting its concepts into production.

The firm’s cX off-roader, seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show earlier this year, previews the look of its Pinin replacement, while the ZT saloon that debuted at Tokyo hints at the styling of the next Galant family car. If the Concept-RA gets a positive response from the British public, Mitsubishi is expected to bring it to dealers here.
