Event organisers have unveiled their bold plans for the expo, which will help pull in more than 550,000 visitors. Set to take place from 23 July to 3 August at ExCeL in London’s Docklands, the extravaganza will boast a raft of new interactive attractions.
These include a drifting school, which will allow visitors to go for passenger rides with expert drivers as they slide high-performance cars sideways around a demanding track.
Children will be catered for with the Kid Car Zone, while a parade of supercars from the past five decades should add extra glamour. There will even be a ‘marina experience’, which will include a line-up of luxury vessels and various events based on the River Thames. These new features add to those which proved a hit at the 2006 show, such as the motor theatre, a week of pop concerts, plus an off-road driving experience.
Of course, attractions are all well and good, but an international motor show needs world debuts to be a success. And organisers claim that there will be more than the previous event’s 14 premieres. More importantly, a spokesman told us that a larger proportion of these would be ‘significant’ new models.
These will include Vauxhall’s new Insignia hatch – which will replace the ageing Vectra – while Saab’s 9-1 Ford Focus rival is also tipped to premiere in London. Sixty manufacturers have already signed up to attend the British Motor Show – that’s around a fifth more than attended in 2006.
Marketing Director Kirsty Perkinson added, “Vehicle manufacturers have responded extremely positively to our plans for the 2008 show and we are absolutely delighted that so many have already signed up to attend. We expect to increase the number of world vehicle debuts, and several unveilings are already scheduled to take place.”
