New DAB tuner

Radio’s a Pure delight!

Digital radio pioneer Pure has come up with a world first – a plug and play in-car DAB tuner.

The Highway differs from other receivers as it’s not part of a standard system or hard-wired to it. Instead, it uses FM modulator technology, similar to that used in some in-car aftermarket MP3 players, to transmit sound through the ICE speakers. Radio station interference can be a problem for FM transmitters, but Pure hopes to overcome this by including quickSCAN to find free wavelengths, and provides four presets to easily swap between them.

As with portable sat-nav systems, the Highway is powered from the cigar lighter and sticks to the screen via a cradle. But Pure’s new unit also requires a DAB aerial on the glass.

The company, which has played a leading role in the development of the UK’s digital market, is confident the Highway will be a hit. It believes it will persuade more drivers of the benefits of switching to DAB units from FM, citing the better sound and greater station choice.

The system also features ReVu, which can pause and rewind live DAB radio, meaning you won’t miss a thing if you have to take a call or stop for fuel. You can even use the Highway away from the car with headphones, but you’ll have to buy these separately.

Highway Pure Road Test

After trading in my car with an inbuilt DAB radio for one without I really missed the choice that DAB gives you. Traffic radio and most of the genre stations are just not available on FM.

The Highway Pure provides the ideal solution for those without standard fit DAB. Some complaint about the clutter of wires on the dashboard but with a little thought and care it is possible to tuck the aerial and power wires out of site.

The set is really easy to use, with channels listed in alphabetical order it is really easy to find channels too. Presets are available to store favourites and sound quality is as good although there can be some hiss that is often cured by changing the FM channel that you are transmitting/receiving on.

My only gripe is that the LCD display is like treacle in very cold weather making it difficult to scan through the station list. One word of warning though.. the adhesive windscreen aerial is single use so you need to set everything in its place before committing to sticking the areal on the screen, although there is an areal adhesive kit available on ebay should you get this wrong.

Definitely worth the money. If you like what DAB has to offer, go out and get one today.
