Monster ZR1 packs 611bhp punch

06th January 2008

This is the Corvette ZR1, and its supercharged 6.2-litre V8 engine delivers an incredible 611bhp and 807Nm of torque.

The US brand has yet to confirm performance figures for the car, but the current Corvette flagship, the Z06, has 505bhp, goes from 0-62mph in 3.9 seconds and hits a top speed of 199mph. So the ZR1 should be able to top the magic 200mph barrier when it arrives in summer.

The hottest Corvette ever features a host of unique styling cues, including an aggressive front splitter to improve aerodynamics. However, enthusiasts will really appreciate the neat window in the bonnet, which provides a tantalising glimpse of the V8 engine beneath.

Other sporty touches include air vents in the front wings and ahead of the rear wheels, and massive 20-inch multi-spoke alloys. Bespoke badging will also set it apart from lesser models. Under the skin, the uprated six-speed manual gearbox has specially selected ratios, while revised suspension ensures the car can handle the extra power. There are also carbon ceramic brakes.

More details will be released when the ZR1 debuts at the Detroit Motor Show later this month.
