Subaru to take on Smart

Look out Smart! The cheeky city car firm could be about to get some competition from an unlikely source.

R1e electric car could be in showrooms next year

Subaru bosses have given the cute R1e concept the green light for production. The company is famous for its turbocharged rally cars, but the electric only R1e has been under development for years and originally appeared in 2003.

A petrol model wearing the R1 badge is already on sale in Japan using a 660cc engine, and the ‘e’ appeared at the Geneva Motor Show last year. It uses an electric motor and lithium-ion batteries to give a zero-emission range of 50 miles and a 60mph top speed. It’s likely to go on sale next year.
