Nüvi 760 has a sleek design and great maps

Navigation giant Garmin has put its latest portable on a diet for the new year. The maker has replaced the fold-out satellite antenna on the Nüvi 760 with a built-in receiver – so it’s now slimmer and lighter.

The 760 features mapping for Europe, and offers superb performance. Garmin’s navigation software is top notch, moving swiftly through screens without glitches. Inputting destinations couldn’t be easier, either; there’s a choice of postcode and address searches, with predictive text as you type.

Navigation was accurate on our test route, and it found our destination on a newly built housing estate easily. Directions were provided in good time, and the fact it reads out road names is a bonus.

We also like the ‘Where Am I?’ function, which points the way to nearby hospitals, plus police and petrol stations. The fact you have to attach an extra wire to pick up an FM signal for traffic updates is irritating, but the data it collects is useful. The 760 also has a camera locator, although muting false alerts was fiddly. There is an MP3 player and Bluetooth hands-free, while power is from a rechargeable battery.

Problems? Extra wire is needed to get traffic updates.
So why buy? Still a top-class navigator, with top software, in a slim package.
