Bluetec Mercedes technology in NY

Futuristic eco-technology to spread across Mercedes' 4x4 range.

Mercedes G-Class

19th March 2008

Mercedes unveiled the next step in its vision of clean, green motoring at the New York Show with a range of diesel powered 4x4s - including the ML 320 and GL 400. Crucially these two vehicles are among the very first to meet tough emmissions regulations in 50 states in the USA, and are scheduled to arrive in Europe as early as 2009.

The Bluetec equipped vehicles use an exhaust gas treatment system to reduce the amount of harmfull emissions from the car - particularly nitrogen oxide, or NOX. This is done by spraying a urea based solution into the exhaust to help convert the gas into a less harmful substance.

At present, plans to bring the car to the UK are still at an early stage, however, Mercedes admits the technology's introduction is likely to be hampered by the fact that while Bluetec's operation reduces NOX, it also causes CO2 emissions to rise. This is expected to be solved in the future, however as the firm plans to pair the technology with a hybrid powertrain by 2010.
