Brake lights

Bright idea for brake lights

New safety device shows how hard the car in front is braking.

Here’s a set of stop lights that shows you how hard the driver in front is slamming on the brakes.

The clever horizontal light bar has been invented by a group of mechanical engineering students at a technical college in Virginia, US. It works by displaying different colours depending on the amount of pressure being applied to the pedal.

The strip in the middle glows amber to warn drivers that the vehicle in front is slowing. Red lights show either side as the car comes to a halt. Designers say the safety device currently costs (£25) to produce. It is not intended to replace existing brake lights that are factory-fitted to vehicles, but rather complement them as an aftermarket add-on.
