Feast your eyes on this retro wonder! If the model looks vaguely familiar, that’s because it’s a reincarnation of the famous De Tomaso Pantera supercar.
Only this car – dubbed the Panthera – should be a lot more reliable and far better to drive. That’s because underneath the swooping body panels are the chassis and running gear of a Lamborghini Gallardo. And that means four-wheel drive and a 5.0-litre V10 with 520bhp.
The Panthera’s stunning design is the work of German stylist Stefan Schulze of FirstSignal 3D engineering. The idea is that supercar fans after something different would first buy the donor car and then take it to the firm, which would transform it into something even more desirable.
Schulze already has a number of other successful and exotic designs to his name, including the Peugeot P4002 supercoupé, which was seen at the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2003.
The original De Tomaso Pantera – which translates as Panther – was an attempt to combine the looks and layout of an Italian supercar with an American muscle car engine.
The body was designed by Dutchman Tom Tjaarda working for coachbuilder Ghia, and the 5.8-litre, 330bhp V8 was supplied by Ford. Production began in 1970 and continued – with limited success – for over 20 years.
