Utility companies dig 2.5 million holes in British roads every year – enough to fill London’s Royal Albert Hall 1,500 times. The shocking figures, collated by the RAC Foundation, show that carriageway works are continuing to strangle the British road network. The RAC also claims that congestion caused by the constant digging up of roads costs the economy £8.6 billion a year. The average wait for road resurfacing across Britain is now 65 years.
