This weekend’s HiQ British Touring Car Championship round at Rockingham will pay tribute to David Leslie and Richard Lloyd, who lost their lives in an air crash near Biggin Hill in Kent last month.
Leslie was one of the BTCC’s stars of the Nineties, winning nine races and finishing as runner-up to Nissan team-mate Laurent Aiello in 1999.
Lloyd’s touring car success came as both a driver and team principal. In the Seventies, he won 12 races in Chevrolet Camaros, plus three class titles in VW Golf GTIs. Then, in 1996, he was in charge of Audi’s title triumph with Frank Biela and the A4 quattro. The accomplishments of both men will be remembered with a period of applause on the grid before the opening race on Sunday. BTCC boss Alan Gow said: “It’s appropriate that we remember David and Richard in this way. Their lives, achievements and what they gave to the BTCC should be honoured and celebrated. We ask everyone at Rockingham to join us in paying tribute to these two really special individuals.”
On the track, Fabrizio Giovanardi will be hoping to build on the strong start he made to his BTCC title defence. The Vauxhall star won two of the opening three rounds staged recently at Brands Hatch.
