Drivers say no to 20mph city limit

20mph

29th April 2008

Three out of five motorists don’t want speed limits reduced to 20mph in town and city centres.

Car supermarket Motorpoint, which carried out the research, said that figure represents a total of around 18 million drivers objecting to the urban limits, which would be dropped from their current rate of 30mph.

Portsmouth is the first local authority to introduce the blanket restrictions, with Norwich council set to follow suit shortly. But they could soon be compulsory across the UK, if proposals put forward by the Parliamentary Advisory Council for Transport Safety get the Government go-ahead. The move is designed to reduce the annual UK road death toll of 3,100 people.
