It's the new ‘Fraud’ Kuga... This familiar-looking concept – said to be inspired by Ford’s recently launched compact SUV – makes its public debut at this week’s Beijing Motor Show in China.
Called the NL and built by Geely, it’s one of an amazing 23 new cars being unveiled by domestic firms. Its chunky looks, aggressive nose and rising waistline mean it’s among the most imposing looking vehicles ever created by a Chinese manufacturer.
However, it’s also one of at least three which bear a close resemblance to models from the blue oval. There’s also the Chery Faria, which is inspired by the next Fiesta, and the Focus-rivalling Changan V802.
Both of these cars appear alongside official Ford products, including a Chinese version of the supermini.
While many concepts appear very similar to established products, there are signs that Chinese designers are beginning to set their own style. The exhibition also sees the unveiling of a range of dramatic home-grown vehicles, such as the Geely GT.
But despite the importance of Chinese car builders at the show, American and European marques are also using the event to debut a range of new cars. These include General Motors’ all-new Invicta luxury model. This is an evolution of the stunning Buick Riviera concept, which was displayed at last year’s Shanghai expo. The company’s recently opened design facility in China is likely to have had a hand in the styling.
