The National Mileage Register (NMR) is expanding fast – making it harder for criminals to clock used cars.

The database is managed by history checking firm HPI to help buyers see how genuine a potential buy is. Last year, the number of mileage readings on its files increased by 25 million to 125 million. Makers such as BMW even provide mileage records for models that are being serviced or repaired. The NMR system alerts buyers if the mileage of a car entered on its V5 logbook during a change of ownership doesn’t tally with previous entries.
