Blades make a clean sweep

Cutting edge rubber in new Michelin wiper blades.

26th April 2008

These new wipers from French tyre giant Michelin may not use the latest flat-blade technology, but under that old-fashioned metal superstructure, the rubber is cutting-edge.

Designers at the firm have come up with a hydrophobic surface for the All Season blades, and this repels water impressively. What’s more, the company claims it reduces the risk of the rubber sticking to the screen in cold weather – this can increase wear, while at the same time reduce wipe quality.

We fitted the blades to a Saab test car, and twice during our assessment, its windscreen got a good coating of ice. Yet the Michelins remained free and moved easily. In warmer weather, they worked well, leaving a streak-free wipe even on the car’s heavily curved screen.

This was down to the blade profile, which is designed to boost cleaning ability and aid insect removal. They were also judder-free and silent when used on a dry screen.

Problems? Design is rather dated, while instructions could be better.
So why buy? The blades provide quiet, fuss-free cleaning, and clever compound means you don’t have to worry about them sticking to your windscreen in cold temperatures.
