Glut of switches proves a turn-off

Too many buttons on car steering wheels could be a distraction for drivers, road safety experts have warned.The latest Honda Accord (above) and Citroen C5 both have up to 20 switches in front of the driver, operating cruise control, audio and telephone systems. RoSPA safety manager Duncan Vernon said: “Manufacturers need to consider how easy the steering wheel is for the driver to use. It could be dangerous if they are fumbling around for the right switch.”
 
Brit sheikh-up for parking laws

The petrol may be cheaper than bottled water – but residents of Abu Dhabi will soon be forced to pay for parking. British-based company NCP Services has been awarded a huge £130million contract to monitor and control parking there. It will be the first time restrictions have been applied in the city. But NCP Services hopes its scheme will soon be one of the world’s most advanced. Motorists will be able to pay using coins, pre-paid cards or mobile phones, and Abu Dhabi’s Traffic Police department will directly monitor meters. The rapid rise in vehicle numbers among the city’s 750,000 residents means spaces are over-subscribed by 40 per cent.
