Here’s are a couple of Fords that serve up pace as well as space. The blue oval has revealed that its rakish S-MAX and versatile Galaxy MPVs will get the powerful new 2.2-litre turbodiesel engine from the Mondeo.

Boasting 172bhp and a tree sump-pulling 400Nm of torque – increasing to 420 with an over boost facility - the latest oil-burner serves up strong performance. Acceleration from zero to 60mph takes 9.4 seconds in the S-MAX, with the Galaxy is just 0.2 seconds behind. However, both the seven-seaters will return over 42mpg.

Elsewhere in the range, 2.0-litre TDCi motors mated to an auto transmission get a power boost of 10bhp to match the 138bhp of the manual gearbox cars. Also added to the firm’s people carrier line-up is flexi-fuel variant. Using a 2.0-litre petrol motor, the car can run on either bioethanol or unleaded.

Finally, the entire S-MAX and Galaxy range now get bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity as standard.

Prices start at £17,800 for the S-MAX and £19,800 for the larger Galaxy.
