Electric Rangie on the charge

Luxurious electric-powered SUV promises hot hatch performance. But are batteries included?

A Gas-guzzling Range Rover is the last thing we expected to see at the Sexy Green Car Show in Cornwall – but appearances can be deceptive.

This is a fully electric version of the huge off-roader, a conversion available from Liberty Electric cars. The battery-powered machine costs from £95,000, and promises to be quicker than the V8 petrol model, with a 125-mile range.

But it was just one of the highlights of the world’s only expo dedicated to green cars. Fledgling British manufacturer Axon Auto-motive unveiled its 100mpg hatchback made from ultra-light recycled carbon fibre. It uses a tiny 500cc engine, and should be in production by 2010. Morgan was also present with its hydrogen fuel-cell powered Lifecar, while Lotus had its 270bhp Exige tri-fuel on display. This is a standard car converted to run on petrol, ethanol and methanol – or any combination of the three.
