From YouTube to personal websites, the trend for home video is growing fast – and so is the desire for driving action.

However, the X-Driven DRS1100 does more than record track exploits. It can also provide evidence in a collision.

The device, powered by the 12V socket, attaches to the windscreen with a sticky pad. There is also a suction mount, but we had difficulty fitting it securely. Data is constantly recorded on a 2GB SD memory card which can store up to 90 hours’ low-quality footage, or around three on high-quality.

We recorded more than 14 hours’ acceptable footage and were impressed with the unit’s ability in low light. While sound quality wasn’t perfect, it was better than that of some rivals. Due to the windscreen mount, in-car footage isn’t an option but the wide-angle, fish-eye lens captured all the action in front of the vehicle.

The internal G-Force sensor measures lateral movement while the GPS module displays the vehicle’s speed on screen, although we found it a bit erratic. Using the GPS you can also pinpoint your location with Google maps, which is handy on track or off-road.

Problems? Viewing software is not compatible with a Mac.
So why buy? Long recording times and G-Force metering are great for track days, and provide good back-up in the event of an incident, or for monitoring a car’s usage.
