Cams KO lane cheats

ko

12th July 2008

Motorists who switch lanes to dodge speed cameras will be caught out by the latest technology heading to the UK.

Unlike average-speed traps, the units from Dutch firm Gatsometer monitor multiple lanes, making it very hard for drivers to avoid detection.

The system will also give police more flexibility when issuing fines according to Serco, the firm from Bracknell, Berkshire, which is hoping to import the traps. A spokesman said: “These cameras can not only calculate average speeds for each road section, but police can also decide whether they want to pick one stretch for prosecution or an average along the whole road.”

He added: “They’ll be much harder to dodge than the current units.” Speeds at entry and exit points can also be used to catch motorists out.

The cameras are already licensed for use in Holland, but Serco is seeking Home Office approval to install
them by the autumn.
