VW’s space age vision of future

Ever wondered what you will be driving in 20 years’ time? Volkswagen has asked its designers exactly that – and this is their vision of 2028!

There are three distinct vehicles, and first up for city dwellers is the One. It’s a single-seater capable of docking with other Ones on the move – forming trains during rush hour that can be steered away from traffic jams.

They will also be able to communicate with nearby vehicles to prevent any collisions or find a parking space. For those who put style and driver involvement first, there’s the aptly named Ego. The sporty two-seater features gullwing doors and chameleon-like changeable paint. It also scans its surroundings using cameras, lasers and ultrasound to avoid any potential hazards.

And for those motorists who want space and comfort, there’s the Room. Drivers can select an autopilot mode in certain situations, such as motorway driving, so you can relax and spend quality time with your occupants.

VW has revealed that the cars will run on second-generation biofuels, made from plant waste rather than the edible part of the crop. It also sees hydrogen as a short-term solution; instead, the company is eyeing ultra-efficient batteries, powered by solar panels on the car’s roof.
