Simply spending a few minutes doing basic safety checks – such as ensuring your lights are working and that your tyres are inflated to the correct pressure – can make a huge difference. The chances are you haven’t adjusted the position of your seat since you bought your car, either; you should take the time to set it up correctly. This includes the headrest, the top of which should be as high as your head and then brought
as close to you as possible.
Seatbelts aren’t just a case of clunk click, either – check the belt is as tight as possible, and that it crosses your pelvic region, not your stomach, and doesn’t touch your neck.
But it’s not only about the car you drive and how you set it up; you should stash a number of other things in the boot for an emergency. The AA recommends drivers pack headache tablets, water, a compass, aftersun cream and, in winter, a blanket.
We’ve taken this further and listed our 10 safety products that are crucial for any journey.
