Citroen star Sebastien Loeb reigned in Spain, as he took a dominant victory on the Rally of Catalunya.
The defending champion is now well on his way to securing a record fifth world title, after his nearest rival Mikko Hirvonen could only manage third place behind Loeb’s team-mate Dani Sordo. Loeb went flat-out from the start of the all-tarmac event, setting fastest times on every one of the first day’s six special stages.
He went on to demonstrate his skill on asphalt by topping the leader board a total of 11 times on the 18-stage event. Arch rival Hirvonen struggled to keep up with the French ace, and only secured the final podium spot after Ford team-mate Francois Duval slowed to let the Finn through. Hirvonen now lags 12 points behind Loeb with only three rounds remaining.
But Sebastien was cautious about his prospects. “I’m very happy,” said the Citroen driver. “It’s been a good rally for me – almost perfect – but it hasn’t been easy. I now have to push hard while trying not to take any risks.”
Next up is another tarmac event, the Rally of France on the Mediterranean island of Corsica on 11 October. Worryingly for his rivals, Loeb’s home event is one that he has won for the past three years.
