Get ready to think outside the box! Here are the first official pictures of Nissan’s next Cube.

Set to wow this week’s Los Angeles Motor Show, the newcomer is the third incarnation of a model which, until now, hasn’t strayed far from the trendy streets of Tokyo.

That all changes with this car. It retains the asymmetrical rear pillars and side-hinged tailgate, but now comes with 1.6-litre petrol and 1.5-litre diesel power. This will enhance its appeal in European markets including the UK from launch next November.

As with the Citroen Berlingo and Renault Kangoo, the Cube is no longer than a supermini, but uses its extra height to create plenty of space for five people.

The curves continue inside, with the dashboard taking on what Nissan describes as a wave shape. The door handles also have a distinctive design.

Further back, inspiration has been taken from the company’s Note supermini-MPV, as the Cube has a sliding rear bench to maximise either boot space or legroom. Passengers in the back also sit higher than the two in front, and a large sunroof gives an airy feel. A price tag of around £11,000 is expected.
