2009 Open champs

There are more wind-in-the-hair thrillers to look forward to this summer than ever

Prepare to witness the rebirth of two legends! Mazda's MX-5 is facelifted in March 2009, while Fiat is promising the world a drop top based on the popular 500 by summer.

Elsewhere lottery winners should be well catered for with the launch of the new Lamborghini LP560-4, while Audi fans are set to get to grips with the long awaited A5 Cabriolet.

Don't miss the new 308CC from Peugeot, or the latest MINI convertible. Both models are tipped for the top when they go on sale in Spring.

Mazda MX-5   Peugeot 308 CC   BMW Z4   Fiat 500 Cabrio
1. Mazda MX-5

Roadster benefits from tweaks inside and out, plus engine upgrades and a new six-speed box. Still a little cracker.

Buy it: April 2009

2. Peugeot 308 CC

Replacement for 307 CC is longer and wider, plus safer than before. Three trims and four engines provide lots of choice.

Buy it: April 2009

3. BMW Z4

Bigger is better for the Z4, as it gets the longer, wider new 3-Series platform. The main difference is the introduction of a metal folding roof. UK prices will start from around £25,000.

Buy it: March 2009

4. Fiat 500 Cabrio

Drop-top version of 500 gets a rollback canvas roof, and should start at £9,000. Engines will be exactly the same as in the standard car, and there could even be a turbo Abarth.

Buy it: April 2009

Audi A5 Cabrio   MINI Convertible
5. Audi A5 Cabrio

While BMW’s Z4 has switched to a hard-top, Audi has retained a fabric roof for its forthcoming A5 Cabriolet range. The coupé’s muscular look is carried over, while the seven-strong engine range is topped by a 328bhp blown V6 in the S5. Prices should stat from around £33,000.

Buy it: October 2009

6. MINI Convertible

More than two years after the facelifted MINI arrived comes the Convertible. It gets a sharper profile, smaller roll hoops and new tail-lights, while new engines are carried over from the tin-top. Prices for the new MINI will start around £14,000

Buy it: March 2009
