This is the Mercedes that we reckon should be called the C-Glass! It’s the replacement for the current CLK – and, as our spy shot shows, it has a special targa top with full-length opening sunroof.
The car is actually tipped to be called the CE. Its roof, made of toughened panels of tinted glass, is a further development of the innovative arrangement of tilting panels already offered on smaller Mercs, including the entry-level A-Class.
Potential CE owners have plenty to look forward to, as the firm promises the car will blend the sophistication and comfort of an E-Class saloon with the sporty good looks of a C-Class coupé. Cosmetic changes are complemented by a mechanical makeover, and the addition of technology such as Mercedes’ Adaptive Damping System, as well as adjustable settings for the steering and body control.
The rear-wheel-drive model will use C-Class engines, including the 1.8 petrol and 3.0-litre V6 diesel units.
Oil-burners are expected to dominate sales, and prices are set to match the CLK’s rivals at about £26,000.
