Tata Nano hits Europe

Indian 'car for the masses' makes Euro show debut.

Here's one star of India that caught our eye on the Geneva show stands.

The latest version of Tata’s city car took centre stage – and the Nano Europa will help the Jaguar and Land Rover owner make inroads into Europe.

After going on sale in its home market for the equivalent of £1,400 in the next two months, the Nano is set to arrive in Europe in 2010. However, the company officials we spoke to said the firm’s small electric family hatch will hit UK showrooms first. The new Indica EV has already been put through its paces at industry research body MIRA’s test track in Nuneaton, Warks, and Tata is now readying the car for a Euro NCAP crash test in the summer. “We’re anticipating a four-star score,” a spokesman told Auto Express.

The newcomer, which has been developed with the help of Norwegian electric vehicle specialist Miljobil Grenland, is fitted with a hi-tech lithium-ion superpolymer battery.

This promises a range of 120 miles from a single charge. The eco-friendly four-seater will also complete the sprint from 0-60mph in less than 10 seconds, while its battery can be fully revived in eight hours.

Price could be the only sting in the tail. The Indica EV will go on sale in Norway next year for 250,000NOK – that’s the equivalent of £25,000.
