Hi-tech nav touches down!

New device looks good, although its multi-touch screen has to be pressed hard to function.

Apple’s iPhone has made such an impact, it’s no surprise that other products – like sat-navs – are copying its multi-touch interface. In Issue 1,044, we tried Navman’s iPhone-inspired S100. And now, the company’s higher-spec S300T has arrived.

The newcomer uses the same software as its stablemate, but adds Bluetooth and traffic data. It looks exactly the same as the entry-level model, with a sleek and elegant case, plus a simple windscreen mount. And thanks to the integrated TMC receiver, it manages to keep you informed of any traffic problems without messy wires or plug-ins.

We found the screen and audio instructions clear to follow, but were less keen on the mapping software. As with the S100, it suffered issues with re-routing where it preferred U-turns to new routes. The interface problems were also still present; you need to press hard for the screen to register. This is fine when you’re holding the unit, but awkward once it’s fixed to your windscreen.

However, the Bluetooth worked well, and when you consider the integrated traffic solution and competitive price, the new S300T has to be the pick of the Navman range.

Problems? Clunky user interface, poor battery life, could be quicker to load up from start screen.
So why buy? Looks fantastic with its slim design, good windscreen mount and sound quality, while traffic information is effective.
