IF you're in the market for a small premium car, this could be the '1' for you! Following a facelifted version in 2007, BMW has been working hard on a totally updated replacement for its 1-Series hatchback – and, thanks to our spies, we can bring you pictures of the all-new machine.

Caught undergoing testing in Germany, the new 1-Series wears some rather psychedelic camouflage – but it's clear to see the new model's shape beneath the swirls. And although stylists have taken an evolutionary to the look of the car, the front end gets a more upright look, and is likely to benefit from the same kidney grilles and headlights at the 5-Series GT.

As well as the five-door hatchback shown here, insiders say that the new 1-Series line-up will feature a shooting-brake-style two-door estate/hatchback crossover – similar to the MINI Clubman. Such a model would be very practical and able to carry tall passengers in the rear, but also look sporty too.

Sources have also revealed that BMW's engine development joint venture with Peugeot-Citroen would see a new range of small capacity turbo units, from 1.4-litres and above. An M version has not been ruled out, but BMW is expected to concentrate on greener models such as low-polluting diesels and maybe even a hybrid.
