BTCC set to up pace – and cut costs

More thrills on the way for tin-tops

The BTCC is set to get faster, more exciting... and cheaper! Series bosses have revealed a radical shake-up of the rules that they claim will improve racing and slash expenditure by around 50 per cent.

From 2011, new technical regulations will allow teams to enter what are being termed Next Generation Touring Cars (NGTC). All the racers will be based on large family cars, feature front-wheel drive and have powerful turbocharged 2.0-litre engines.

However, despite the increase in performance, costs will be kept down, thanks to standardised components, such as the gearbox, brakes and suspension.

Existing S2000 machinery will be able to compete until 2013, when a boost in power to the NGTC should persuade all squads to switch.
